GMP+ is a standard aimed at all companies within the animal feed supply chain. Entities working with organisations in certain Western European countries, including the Netherlands and Germany, are required to obtain certification under this standard. However, the GMP+ standard is gradually becoming established as an international standard, and currently around 18,000 companies worldwide are already operating in accordance with its requirements. In practice, therefore, it is becoming increasingly difficult for entities that do not opt for GMP+ certification to operate in the feed market.
The following may apply for GMP+ FSA (Feed Safety Assurance) certification:
Manufacturers:
Distributors:
Transport and storage service providers:
The GMP+ standard (Good Manufacturing Practices) sets out requirements for the quality and safety of animal feed. In its original form, it was developed in 1992 by the Dutch Product Board Animal Feed in response to incidents of contamination in feed materials. The national standard quickly gained international recognition and developed into an international system managed by GMP+ International.
The requirements of the GMP+ standard are based on good hygiene and manufacturing practices (GHP/GMP) commonly used in the food industry. They also relate to the HACCP system. Furthermore, GMP+ is consistent with the standards of the International Organisation for Standardisation – ISO 9001 (quality management system) and ISO 22000 (food safety management system) and complies with Regulation No 183/2005 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 12 January 2005 laying down requirements for feed hygiene. As a result, the GMP+ guidelines can be easily integrated into management systems already in place within a company.
The GMP+ system has been developed to ensure that, at every stage of production and distribution, feed and feed ingredients meet specific quality and quantity requirements, and that animal feed is free from all types of contamination (physical, chemical and microbiological). Compliance with specific standards for animal feed translates into food safety for humans. This is because the quality of animal-derived raw materials (meat, dairy products, etc.) depends on the quality of the feed.
The requirements of the GMP+ standard cover various aspects – from hygiene rules within the company premises to the scope of management responsibility. Due to the diverse nature of operations within the feed sector, there are several types of GMP+ standards and associated certificates.
The most common relate to:
The GMP+ system is compatible with other management systems, such as ISO 9001:2015, making the integration of management systems more effective.
The primary benefit of applying good manufacturing practices in the feed industry is an improvement in the quality and safety of products, thereby raising standards of human nutrition. A company that decides to implement the GMP+ system also gains many other benefits, including:
Implementing the GMP+ standard is a key element in building the image of a company operating in the feed industry. A company holding GMP+ FSA certification becomes a reliable partner on global markets (where GMP+ certification is increasingly mandatory), gains a competitive advantage on the domestic market, and enjoys greater trust from current and potential customers. Consequently, the company gains greater sales opportunities, which translates into increased profitability.
